Matt Clarke, our co-founder and director, has been based in Shanghai since 2005. Together with co-founder Clark Wang, he established Shoot In China in 2012, bringing an understanding of international filmmaking together with local production experience.
Our Shanghai video director services cover company films, commercials, branded content, interviews and documentary-style stories. Some clients need help developing the idea. Others have an agency concept in place and want a director and local production team to bring it to the screen.
Finding the Story in the Business
A company film often starts with people who know their subject well but do not spend their lives presenting it on camera. We work with the client to identify the people, places and activity that will tell the story, then develop the treatment, script or interview approach around them.
For a manufacturer, the images may follow a product through assembly and testing. For a service business, the story may sit in a conversation with a customer or an employee at work. The director connects those scenes to the message without making every contributor sound like a company statement.
Directing People on Location
Matt works with contributors and talent while the camera, lighting and sound departments prepare the scene. An executive interview, a performance for a commercial and a documentary conversation each need a different working approach.
Our bilingual production team helps the director work with Chinese-speaking contributors and local crew. That connection makes room for follow-up questions, changes in a performance and ideas that develop during filming, as well as the scenes already agreed with the client.
Creative Direction with Local Production Behind It
Direction is supported by producers who arrange crew, casting, locations, equipment and the day-to-day coordination. We can build a local unit around the director or work with departments brought by an overseas agency or production company.
The photographs on this page show Matt and Clark on set, alongside other production work. It is a practical partnership: the creative decisions and the local arrangements stay in conversation throughout the shoot.
From the Shoot to the Edit
We can stay with a film through editing, colour grading, sound, graphics and subtitles, or deliver footage to an agency’s own post-production team. The director’s involvement helps connect the scenes captured on location with the story taking shape in the edit.
Our work includes corporate brand films, commercials, leadership interviews and training content. A production can result in a longer company film as well as shorter versions for web or internal use, with language versions arranged for the audience.
Working with Our Shanghai Team
We work with international clients directly and alongside agencies, adapting to the creative team already in place. Shanghai is our base, with production support available through our network elsewhere in China when the film continues beyond the city.
