It sounds crazy but now it’s almost 8 years, I joined video production industry for almost 8 years, it’s a long time, and especially in shanghai china this city with a lot of limit in this industry, it’s also lucky to be able to work with a lot of insiders to see what this industry is all about.
I did started as a helper, most things in this industry apart from few celebrates, I have no idea what this industry is all about, so it’s also a good thing to cut in because there is just nothing more interesting than this business.

so here is a few things I learned from this industry:
-always pay on attention on the details;
as a matter of fact, none of us would follow that when we just started, we always believe the world is a great place to hang out but forgot how serious the small details are; with many mistakes made, I learned a good lesson of how to pay attention on the details.
-listen to people talking carefully;
you have to make yourself very clear on what you want to express, and you are a video person, you should be able to do this without any problem, same time you should be able to listen, if you can’t listen people carefully and patiently, that’s a bad start on communication. Don’t rush people to talk, and try not to push those whom were talking, also don’t disturb people even people from outter space; make the people aware that you are listening, so you can lead a much better conversation. and it’s not about being cool to people, a lot of people think that being cool is important on set, but when it comes to working with others, it’s all about talking and listening.
-respect your enemy;
there is no “enemy” in this industry, the market is big enough to handle most of companies which tried hard and worked well, and even a lot of people from this industry are freelancers, they are all living fine in the same industry, there is no need to hate as it’s a game between companies not personals, there is a lot of chances you meet your competitors on the same set, but who cares as long as people all got receive their pay check?
-what client needed, is really what they needed
There is nobody in this world who won’t want to live longer, so wasting time is always considering as a crime, we all agree that clients can cause some troubles, but it’s all manageable if you have enough experience, but when they wanted to make something happen, try to help instead just quote, give a lot more care than the business, in the end, respect your client so they will keep a good reputation for you in the industry.
-learning all the time
this industry is on the edge of technology, any new update in this video production industry is good to know, and by the time i got use to big data, you won’t be scare of the new thing any more, it’s just small update by small update everyday, but it’s all going to be big change to you after few weeks of not concerning.
Learning is always good, don’t stop learning when you think it’s enough, nothing is enough, keep greedy on the information and technology so you can be more helpful to yourself and others.
-respect everyone
yes, not just your enemy, everyone deserve your respect, video production newbee is always difficult to start, but you don’t have to be specially caring for certain ones, respect others is always important, not just in the job, when it’s part of you, you will find much easier to deal with people.
-there is no small job
any job is important to you and your client, people always follow the basic rules in this world, that’s why job is set up to be job, and you can get benefit or money from it, if you miss on someone’s job, then that’s a sign of irresponsible; if you are late for something “small”, then you will probably wasting people’s time; if the job is small, you will always think it’s too small for you.
So just do your job well, whatever if it’s a well paid cash cow client, or a “hobby&interest” type of job
-stay health
this should be the 1 top priority but we are all crazy in this industry so who cares right? No, health is very important, you live with your body, and when it’s not functioning well, you are not you, rather than risking your life and causing the damage on the project, stop your work, learn to listen to your body, get it fixed up, make yourself like a happy dog all the time.
Eat&drink in time, with healthy elements of food, make it with your family, friends, colleagues, and clients, make it a experience rather than a process, this is a tasting experience with others, much easier to engage with people, thus be helpful with communication with others.
-Be aware of your role.
people all get ambitious when they want to, age can stop it, people might change, I suggest people not to “fake” too much in front of the clients or others, this world is full of information, we all need to relax and make others life easier, so no need to be too much on the act, just stay true with your clients.
There is a lot more than what I said, I believe could be useful to you, sometimes when you want to join a industry, you would always ask yourself why you want to, and give yourself a few good reasons before you join.
