Desert and Rock Filming Locations in China

Desert filming locations in China offer more than one look: clean sand dunes, wind-eroded yardangs, red mountain folds and earth pillars. These six references help compare desert locations for car commercials, outdoor brand photography and documentary filming. Yuanmou and the Flaming Mountains are rock-landscape alternatives rather than open sand deserts.

Start with the required scene: a static picture vehicle, a moving car, people on a dune, or an empty landscape. The backdrop, the driving surface and the unit base may be separate locations. A scout should establish each before a production commits to the route.

See the 16-location landscape overview for more natural and cultural settings.

The photographs are credited location references, not examples of Shoot In China projects. Seasonal windows below are starting points for the desired look; current transport, parking and commercial access must be confirmed for the production dates.

1. Mingsha Sand Dunes, Dunhuang, Gansu

Mingsha combines dune ridges, camel routes and the oasis setting around Crescent Spring. It is a starting reference for sand dune filming locations, outdoor clothing photography and a desert documentary with recognisable visitor activity.

Getting There. Arrive at Dunhuang airport or railway station, then transfer by road to the scenic-area entrance south of the city. Confirm the entrance and booked visiting period before arranging the crew call.

Parking and Equipment Access. Use the designated entrance parking. Carrying equipment onto sand is slower than walking on a road; agree the final carry distance and any authorised transfer with the operator.

Season and Visual Direction. April–May and September–October are useful planning windows for a dune brief with less summer heat. Early or late light gives the sand more visible relief; wind and footprints change the scene.

Food and Crew Catering. Dunhuang is the practical catering base. Arrange packed meals, drinking water and a shaded rest option before leaving; do not count on food being available beside an isolated dune.

Commercial Filming. For a car commercial, the dunes are a visual reference, not confirmation that a picture vehicle can enter. Ask about the exact vehicle, route, tracks and working area before presenting a driving scene as feasible.

2. Taklamakan Desert, Xinjiang

The Taklamakan offers large dune fields and desert-road horizons. It can suit automotive landscape photography, an expedition documentary or a remote outdoor-brand brief. It is a vast region: choose a specific road corridor and approved working site rather than booking “the desert”.

Getting There. Select the arrival city after choosing the location. Luntai, Qiemo, Hotan and other desert-edge hubs serve different routes; a single airport or rail station cannot represent the whole region.

Parking and Equipment Access. Scout legal stopping and turning space, fuel range and equipment loading before fixing the route. A public desert highway is through-traffic infrastructure, not a parking area or automatically available film road.

Season and Visual Direction. April–May or September–October are starting windows for avoiding the strongest summer heat. Spring can bring dust and wind, so compare the forecast with the desired visibility and dune texture.

Food and Crew Catering. Pre-arrange food, drinking water and fuel from the last confirmed service base. Build the catering plan around the actual route and return distance rather than assuming roadside services are continuous.

Commercial Filming. Desert locations for car commercials need separate vehicle access and road-control arrangements. Specify static photography versus tracking shots, and keep off-road access, recovery support and any protected planting distinct from ordinary road travel.

3. Dunhuang Yardang Geopark, Gansu

Wind-eroded ridges and isolated rock forms give Dunhuang Yardang a different look from clean sand dunes. It suits geological documentary locations, rock-texture photography and a desert commercial brief built around scale and silhouettes.

Getting There. Use Dunhuang as the arrival and overnight base, then plan the road journey west to the geopark. Keep this transfer separate from a short visit to the dunes near the city.

Parking and Equipment Access. Confirm entrance parking and the current sightseeing-vehicle route. Ask whether the camera position is an authorised stop and how the equipment moves from the vehicle to the selected formation.

Season and Visual Direction. April–May and September–October are starting windows for a less hot working day. Low-angle light can separate the rock silhouettes, but wind and dust may affect visibility and sound.

Food and Crew Catering. Arrange meals and supplies in Dunhuang and carry a packed option for the full road day. Confirm the last food, fuel and toilet stop during scouting.

Commercial Filming. A desert automotive backdrop may be possible from a separately approved road or working area. Do not drive between formations or assume that a visitor transfer route can be closed for a commercial shoot.

4. Urho Ghost City, Karamay, Xinjiang

Urho offers sculpted yardang ridges, broad dry ground and long rock horizons. It can fit car commercial location research, outdoor brand imagery and a geological documentary, with a different colour and silhouette from Dunhuang.

Getting There. Arrive in Karamay and continue by road to Urho and the World Ghost City scenic area. The city lists a tourism transport connection; confirm current operation and equipment capacity if using it.

Parking and Equipment Access. The scenic area publishes self-drive services, but production access still needs its own agreement. Confirm the permitted route, designated parking and loading distance for the chosen rock backdrop.

Season and Visual Direction. April–May or September–October are starting windows for milder working conditions. Early and late light can reveal surface texture; strong wind can change both visibility and the practicality of a setup.

Food and Crew Catering. Use Urho or Karamay for pre-booked meals and supplies. Arrange water and packed catering for a long shoot, with a base that can provide shade and charging if required.

Commercial Filming. For desert car photography, distinguish a parked vehicle from moving-camera work. Obtain agreement for vehicle placement, camera rigs and traffic handling; a self-drive visitor ticket is not a filming-road booking.

5. Yuanmou Earth Forest, Yunnan

Yuanmou’s earth pillars and gullies provide a dry rock landscape rather than an open sand desert. It is useful for geology documentary filming, textured outdoor photography and a commercial brief needing an unusual earth-coloured background.

Getting There. Use Kunming as a regional arrival hub, then connect by road or rail towards Yuanmou and the chosen earth-forest entrance. Wumao and Langbapu are different sites and should not be treated as one setup.

Parking and Equipment Access. Official material describes visitor infrastructure and parking, but confirm the specific entrance and vehicle arrangements. Narrow walking routes between pillars can limit stands, carts and the size of a camera package.

Season and Visual Direction. November–April is a starting window for a drier visual brief and lower rain exposure. Choose early or late light to give the pillars depth; check actual heat, shade and path condition.

Food and Crew Catering. Arrange the main crew meal in Yuanmou or with the selected local base. Carry drinking water and a packed option into the site so the unit does not need an extra transfer between setups.

Commercial Filming. The county identifies filming activity at Langbapu, but previous productions do not establish present permission. Confirm the exact working area, props and footprint; the formations are not a vehicle-driving surface.

6. Flaming Mountains, Turpan, Xinjiang

Red sandstone folds and sparse vegetation create a warm, dry mountain backdrop near Turpan. This is a rock-landscape option for outdoor commercials and desert documentary filming, distinct from the pale dunes elsewhere in this guide.

Getting There. Arrive in Turpan by rail or air and continue by road to the selected scenic-area entrance. Confirm the precise site: different managed attractions and viewpoints use the Flaming Mountains name.

Parking and Equipment Access. Ask the selected operator to confirm parking, unloading and the route to the camera position. Do not assume that nearby highway frontage gives permission for a picture vehicle or roadside unit base.

Season and Visual Direction. April–May and September–October are starting windows for reducing exposure to peak summer heat. The red rock still changes strongly with light direction; midday can be harsh for people and equipment.

Food and Crew Catering. Pre-book crew meals in Turpan and plan water, shade and shorter working blocks on location. Local food can be part of the travel experience, but catering timing should follow the actual call sheet.

Commercial Filming. For automotive commercial locations, scout an approved road or hard-standing area with the desired backdrop. The scenic mountain surface and the public road are separate access questions; avoid promising a driving route from reference photos alone.
